Rising Beyond Challenges: Courage, Care, and Lifelong Learning

Indramaya Tourangi (7th batch, Adm. no.:154) Dhading

There are 6 members in my family – Father, Mother and 3 brothers. My father passed away on 12 Falgun 2058 BS when I was 4 years old. My mother worked as a home maker. Now, I have a new father who loves me as my real father. Our family was a poor family. At that time, we could afford only 2 times of meals in a day. Our house was made of roof with straw and wall of stone. Now, the roof is made of metal sheet. We were scarce of food for six months. We used to eat corn flour as meal and we had to wait till Dashain to buy new clothes and eat rice meals. Now we can afford as our will.

BHCH has had a positive impact in my life in shaping me academically, personally and socially. In BHCH, I received a high-quality education. Beyond academics, it emphasized practical life skills. I learned cooking, sewing, dancing, knitting and other crafts which promote self-reliance and creativity. BHCH created a strong sense of community and belonging like supportive environment, caring teachers, caretakers like mother and father which make the school feel like a second home. I am proud to say I am here today because of BHCH and sponsors. Their guidance and education gave me the foundation to succeed in life. Without their support, I would not be where I am today. At present, I am working as a nurse in a hospital in Chitwan, providing care and medical treatment to patients and working with team of doctors and nurses.

From Himalayan Heights to Leadership: Serving Communities with Vision

Karma Dhundup (Vice-chairman of Chharka Tangsong rural municipality)

First of all, I would like to thank BHCH founder Mrs Marlies Kornfeld as a guardian of my life and the institute that raised me and enlightened me to the better future. My hometown is called Chharka Bhot that used to be an isolated area in terms of education, infrastructure and development during my childhood. Chharka Bhot lies at 4350m height from the sea level at Himalayan and is also known as “the world’s highest human habitation”. Those time, children here were unsecured from education and the school facilities.

Later on, my father sent me to BHCH. Then BHCH became my guardian that raised me and my other friends and guided us to a better future. We were the first batch. And now I am serving as the vice chairman of Chharka Tangsong Rural Municipality at Dolpa. Working and serving this place in educational, health, drinking water, infrastructure, and social life betterment activities. This was all possible because of BHCH family. And once again, I would like to thank BHCH and wish all the new family for a good future and education.

Empowered by Education: Leading with Purpose and Perseverance

Er. Hom Bahadur Tamang (5th Batch, Adm. no: 171)

After the untimely demise of my mother, my father, devastated by the tragedy, turned to alcohol. As a result, our family’s economic condition began to deteriorate. We relied on farming, which was barely enough to provide food. Though my grandparents were there to look after me, they couldn’t afford my education or proper clothing. In mid-2004, my relatives living in the capital helped me get admitted to BHCH, which became a major turning point in my life.

BHCH laid a strong foundation for my academic journey. I completed my high school education there with ease. After graduating from BHCH, I felt confident enough to compete for scholarships for higher education. With continuous effort, I successfully passed the scholarship exam for an undergraduate program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (BE). I pursued my BE in Bangalore, India, fully funded by EdCIL (India) Limited, a Government of India enterprise. After completing my BE, I worked with a few private companies. At the same time, I was also preparing for permanent government-level jobs. In early 2023, I cleared the government service examination. Currently, I am working as an Electrical Supervisor at the Nepal Electricity Authority — a government-owned public entity responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in Nepal.

From Student to Staff: A Journey of Gratitude and Growth

Ramila Gurung (4th batch, Adm. no.: 86)

Hello! I am Ramila Gurung, I joined Bright Horizon Children’s Home School in year 2000, a moment that marked the beginning of a very special chapter of my life. I was just a child then curious, shy and full of dreams. Walking in the school for the first time, I remember being nervous and excited at the same time. The colorful classrooms and friends, and the kind faces of the teachers and staff quickly made me feel at home. Life at BHCH was more than just academics. It was a place where I learned how to grow not just in knowledge but in kindness, responsibility, and confidence. The school was not only a place to study it became my second home. We had danced, played games, organized numerous programs and been together to celebrate every festivals and all achievements. I especially loved library time.

BHCH isn’t only school but also a home that taught us moral values. The time after SEE (Secondary Education Examination) was filled with both challenges and opportunities. I faced the pressure of choosing right path whether to continue further studies, take training or start working. My first job was completely new experience. It was not easy. At first adjusting to a professional environment, learning new skills where I realized that life outside school required disciplines, confidence and the ability to keep learning every day. Today, I am proud to say that I am working as a school secretary at BHCHS. Being part of the team that nurtures and supports the needy once is both humble and fulfilling. Working here allows me to be a role model and to show them that with hard work and dedication they can come back to contribute to their community. From being student to becoming a staff of BHCHS my heart remains full of gratitude, love and hope. At last, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to those who made this journey possible and special thanks for Marlies miss, my sponsors and Ambica Shrestha mam who brought me in this school. I would also like to thank all those who have believed in me and supported directly and indirectly in this journey and being a source of strength and inspiration. I am humble to everyone.

From Being Supported to Supporting Others: Continuing the Cycle of Kindness

Pasang Lhamu Sherpa (9th batch, Adm. no.: 400)

My name is Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, originally from the beautiful village called Bamti Bhandar in the Ramechhap district. My journey with the Bright Horizon Children’s Home school (BHCH) has been truly transformative. When I first arrived, I was a shy, reserved young girl with little confidence, uncertain about what lay ahead. Being away from my family for the first time was overwhelming, and I feared I would be alone. However, BHCH soon became much more than just a school; it became a second home. Surrounded by compassionate teachers, dedicated caretakers (our Amlas and Palas), and wonderful peers, I found comfort, friendship, and support. Over the years, we celebrated countless festivals and shared unforgettable experiences, building bonds that felt like family. Among those cherished memories, there were also moments of quiet reflection. During major holidays like Dashain, Tihar, and Lhosar, children with family in Kathmandu would go home, while others remained in the hostel. Witnessing children spending those special times without their loved ones left a lasting impression on me.

It made me understand how deeply important it is for every child to have someone to rely on, a sense of belonging and emotional security. That realization sparked in me a desire to be someone others could turn to for help. BHCH not only supported my academic journey, but it also provided me with valuable guidance and life skills. Today, I feel incredibly fortunate to be living with a caring family and working in the field I pursued during my studies. Inspired by the support I received; I have always felt a strong desire to give back. I am proud to now sponsor a child at BHCH, and I see it as both an honour and a responsibility to help create a brighter future for them. Supporting this child is my way of expressing gratitude to the organisation that helped shape who I am. BHCH has given so much to me and many others, and I remain deeply committed to its mission. I will always carry a sense of loyalty, respect, and appreciation for BHCH and all it continues to do for children in need.

Carrying the Light Forward: From Student to Global Citizen

Navraj Lamichhane (3rd batch, Adm. no: 89)

I lost my mother when I was six years old, and my father abandoned my family. My 3 siblings were farmed out to relatives for shelter. I was picked among my siblings to go to BHCH for school. Over the years at BHCH, I learned it’s the only place for me to create a better future for myself. And, I was navigate most challenges to educate myself and come to America. I have a lot of memories from the school. My top 3 memories are; 1. I miss the first day at BHCH school, such as flowers, beautiful buildings, new friends, playgrounds, and new furniture. 2. I miss spending time with Marlies at one of the monasteries in Nepal. She invited us to spend an afternoon with her, and we ate delicious food and Swiss chocolates. 3. I miss walking around the school every evening and getting in a line for dinner. After a few rounds, I used to get hungry; therefore, we used to get in the dinner line outside the dining hall. I have come very far in terms of growth, achievements, and learning. I could not have done it if I hadn’t received the school’s support. The school means a family to me. It has changed my life and gave me a new beginning. I am so blessed. BHCH has prepared me well. With BHCH education and other skills, I have been able to navigate well with what I want to pursue in my life. It has given me both local and international friendship, cross cultural experiences, quality education. I am so lucky I went there and collected a wonderful experience.

I had a few favourite teachers at the school. I liked Baburam Tiwari sir. He used to be our class teacher. I just loved his hardworking personality. He taught us very well and prepared us well on maths. He finished his Ph.D., and I believe he is busy with research outside Nepal. I just admired Baburam sir very much. After I completed my studies at BHCH, I went to high school in Kathmandu. I was frustrated after high school because I did not know what to do with life. Plus, I did not have a job and money. Therefore, I went back to my hometown and taught in a boarding school. I worked there for a year and managed to return to Kathmandu with an internship at an American non-profit. I asked my Swiss sponsor for college tuition in Kathmandu and received support. Because I did not make enough money interning at the non-profit, I lived at BHCH, taught music in exchange for room and board at the school, enrolled in a college, and started to prepare for a university in America. It was very overwhelming, but I never gave up hope. Currently, I completed an MBA in Non-Profit Management at the University of Portland, USA. I have a dream of becoming a social entrepreneur to help the disadvantaged people of my country. I plan to return home when I gain some years of work experience in the U.S. My biggest wish is to eventually work for a clean energy company and even start my own someday. I am excited to experience what the future holds. I hope to make the best use of all the generosity and education to educate myself and to create a better future for my family, my community, and my country. As a professional I always like to be a successful leader in the business sectors so that I can also help to those helpless children who are seeking for help. Bright Horizon is my home and family. No matter where I go, it is always with me. I miss school every single day. And, I am so proud I went there and gained a wonderful experience. So lastly, I would like to thank BHCH for always leading me in the right path. Also, please if there is anyone to sponsor for BHCH student then it would always be admiring. I would like to appeal to the Sponsor of Germany to help BHCH students who are seeking for their bright future.

Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: Education as a Path to Empowerment

Silu Bhitrikoti (4th batch, Adm. no.: 94) Jhapa

I came to BHCH with my brother. I was 5 years old and my brother was 3 years old. We are children of a blind father and a lovely mother. We belong to “Dailt community” and the word “Dalit” described the group of caste of people who are discriminate or generally neglected in the state or society who suffer from restriction on the use of public amenities, deprivation of economic opportunity with poor background. I was in BHCH from 2000-2010. Three things which I remember the most. The homely environment and lovely friends. We all unite when things come about celebrations like when Marlies and some visitors visit the school, sports day, inauguration days, preparing dances and songs, cleaning the school like pulling grasses in the ground, cleaning and decorating auditorium halls, dining hall etc. The prayers we do every day when we start eating food for breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. The morning assembly, I used to think “when this will end?” I was always very nervous when I had to go in the front of all to give a speech about a topic. Today and every day I would like to say to the beloved children of BHCH, Good things come to you when you believe in yourself, better things come to you when you have patience and best things come to you when you don't give up and hence self-belief and hard work will always earn on you the title “SUCCESS”. BHCH is born to change the life of the needy ones. Also, for me it changes my life in a positive way because it gives me the education, hospitality and homely environment to become a better person in my life and BHCH is a key to my success. There are so many teachers who have put in a lot of effort on behalf of all of us. They always inspire, support, help with ideas and get the chances to discover and share the best parts of ourselves as human beings today and every day. So, for me all of them are the best.

When I finished my school after grade 10, I left the school. Again, we are supported by the school to do grade 11 and 12 outside. When I finished my Grade 12 in science, I had an interest in becoming an eye doctor. I went to India to study because by that time there was no university to do” Bachelor in optometry” in Nepal. The program is all about eye and eye health. Today, I'm an optometrist working in an Optical Eye Clinic. Currently, I have also completed my master's in Optometry from Aalen University Germany. Words fall short when I try to express my sincerest gratitude to my sponsor. I'm very thankful to my sponsor, for your love and support. I will always appreciate your effort and I'm fortunate to find you as my sponsor. The dreams of my life are also the goals of my life which I want to achieve and experience. I want to make my parents proud of me because their dream is my dream and mine theirs, by being able to earn a stable living, sustainably, staying simple, humble and down to earth. BHCH is a place where we light the lamp to lighten the pathway so it brings light into my darkness. My mingle childhood makes me who I'm today and where I stand today. Thank you very much and keep supporting BHCH.
